ConneX Summer Program

The ConneX Summer Program began on June 19, 2006. The focus of the ConneX Summer Program was to provide students with health-related information and hands-on activities beyond the regular classroom.

Summer program partners included Yakima Valley Community College, Heritage University, University of Washington (UW), Central Washington University (CWU), Washington State University, and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC).

The college program was an eight-week program held at Heritage University. Students attended courses in Culture, Health, & Healing (CWU), Global Public Health (YVFWC), and Community Based Research (UW). Students participated in El Proyecto Bienestar conducting community surveys to identify what the Hispanic farm working community feels about environmental and occupational health issues. Clinical placements were arranged for students at YVFWC and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). Students earned three credits from CWU & four credits from UW.

High school students attended a six-week summer program. It began with a two-week Math & Science Camp at Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC). While at YVCC, students learned about forensics and neurobiology of addiction, nervous system, medical terminology, activities around critical thinking, and health professional speakers. Students attended the University of Washington on July 7th and 8th and visited the School of Dentistry, Institute for Systems Biology, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and the Molecular & Cellular Biology Department at the UW. Students did a two-week clinical placement at YVFWC and DVR. Students observed health professionals and were involved in the patient-care process. Students attended Washington State University on July 24 – July 27th and participated in “Exploring Health Careers” hosted by Washington State University College of Pharmacy, and the College’s Healing Gifts fund. It was an introduction to health professions and topics. Students were also involved in reading two books this summer, One Corpse Too Many and Morbid Taste for Bones from Ellis Peters. Fridays were designated as Community Service Day. Students volunteered in nursing homes, the Buena Nueva Apartments Complex (working with elementary children), Washington State Migrant Council, Salvation Army, Food Banks, and many others. Students earned 0.68 credits from Yakima Valley Skills Center in Yakima, WA.

The middle school program was two-full days at YVCC. Students dissected frogs and learned about math and science and how it relates to the health professions.
